Upgrade or Re-install Windows 10

There are cases that we need to re-install Windows 10, or upgrade from previous versions.  Windows 10 can be downloaded from official site of Microsoft, and can be installed easily.

1. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/software-download/windows10.  This is a Microsoft formal notification so it is safe to download.  Note that there are different downloads for fresh installation and for upgrade.
2. Select the right version and follow instructions to download.  Note whether you need 32-bit or 64-bit version.  
3. You will be prompted with a message that requires a key.  Just click OK to continue.  30 days trial is available without a key.
4. Select the media to store the download, whether USB storage device (require min 4GB space) or ISO file (for burning a boot CD).  Normally USB drive is used.  Wait for this to complete and this USB drive will become your bootable device to proceed for Windows 10 installation.

Precaution

Your computer will need drivers for different hardware components, most of them come with your computer bundled by the manufacturers.  Without proper drivers, some of the hardware might not be working.  You might find these drivers available on teh web for download or comes standard together with your hardware.  These drivers should be prepared before proceeding to the installation or upgrade process.

Note

• This is useful for users to re-install their Windows 10 from raw.  But it is recommended to re-format your hard disk first before installation to clean up everything.  Note that you might also need to make a backup of your system before doing that, especially the drivers.
• For upgrade from older versions of Windows, there is a separate package to download from above link.
• Procedure and download links mentioned above might be changed from time to time by the vendors.
